What is Batman – The Telltale Series?
Batman – The Telltale Series is an episodic adventure game where you take control of Batman and the man behind the mask, the billionaire Bruce Wayne. We’ll take a quick look at what the game is about and then show a walkthrough of the first episode.
Developed and published by Telltale Games, the game is available on iOS devices for $4.99. If you want to get the best gameplay experience, then you will have to have one of these recommended devices: iPhone 6 and up, iPad Mini 4 and up, iPad Air 2 and up, and iPad Pro.
The game puts you in the shoes of the industrialist billionaire, Bruce Wayne with whom you will find out things that could make the already corrupt Gotham City even worse. As you make choices as Bruce Wayne you also get to play as the Dark Knight. Choices are very important in the game, just like in any game made by the Telltale developers. There will be consequences for the choices you make. Telltale gives you lots of choice both in conversations and in action. This way the game lets you determine the fate of Batman and the world around him.
This game series spans 5 episodes, and the first episode, “Realm of Shadows” is now available to play after a few delays. We will take a look at this episode in the walkthrough below.
Episode 1 “Realm of Shadows” Walkthrough
Realm of Shadows starts off with a greatly animated, action packed opening scene. As you dive your way through a pretty high City Hall window, you progress through the building floor by floor, beating up the frightened, clueless thugs that are trying to rob the place. These action scenes consist of quickly tapping buttons to match the on screen prompts.
After the action ends, the caped crusader goes back to Wayne Manor, where we take a look at a more complex character then previously seen in any other game or movie. You patch yourself up after fighting those goons and talk to Alfred who seems rather angry. Get your best suit and stagger to Harvey Dent’s political fundraiser.
Just like any Telltale game, you are given various dialogue choices that can change the way characters react to you and shape what happens next in the story.
Throughout the episode you will come across journalists, family friends and mob bosses. You will have to make quick decisions that not only affect how much you help as Bruce Wayne, but also how the world sees Bruce Wayne. While the developers could have just made a game that fully focuses on the Dark Knight, they instead decide to go where no other game has gone before. They decide to show a game that shows more about the man behind the mask: Bruce Wayne.
The episode switches between Bruce Wayne and Batman as you explore deep into a story full of twists. It’s a fun adventure of a few hours in which you experience plenty of things, from hosting press events to crime scene investigations. It’s quite brutal and dark. You are going to face some tough decisions. For example: should you finance a rather known criminal in order to possibly make Gotham a safer, better place? What will you do with that mercenary? Will you torture him in order to get some information out of him that could possibly help save lives?
All these hard decisions really make you think and feel that they matter a lot. Let’s hope they truly affect the future episodes, as I really wonder what will happen next.
When it comes to gameplay, you have the standard part of each Telltale game where you walk around and find things to progress further. Unfortunately, this tends to last longer than you’d like. As for the dialogue though, it’s excellent.
The ending of the episode is great. There’s a pretty cool stealth section at the end where you explore a building while silently taking out each thug in it. I love this part. It’s great and makes sense considering the character you are playing as. You also really feel like you took part in everything that goes on.
Overall, Episode 1: “Realm of Shadows” is a pretty good start. With superb voice acting and a story that shows Bruce Wayne in a way you have never seen him before, you are bound to enjoy this game. Sure, there are some things that could have been done better, but Telltale did a pretty good job for their first try on making a Batman game.
