What is Afterlight?
Afterlight Version 3.1.1 is an image editing app that lets you easily and quickly edit your photos. With a nice, simple design and great tools, it won’t take too long to get that look you want.
The app is available on iOS and Android devices for $0.99. It also contains In-App Purchases and requires a iOS version of 6.0 or later.
When you start up Afterlight you will see two big buttons on the home screen: a button for the camera, and a button for the photo gallery functions of the app. You may notice that the camera interface looks a lot like the iOS 6 camera app. But, if you hold two fingers against the screen you will see that it is possible to separately control the focus and aperture, as well as show a rule of thirds crosshairs. Unfortunately you cannot see any filter effects while taking a picture.
While taking a picture with the app you will notice that there are no advantages over the iPhone’s included camera app, particularly that of the new iOS 7. Depending on which iPhone model you also use, you can end up actually losing some features: the HDR, Panorama and the 5s’s burst mode. Luckily, you don’t have to take pictures using the app. You can freely use images found in your camera roll, which is something some camera apps don’t let you do.
The advantage that Afterlight has over Instagram is that you can actually do some basic photo correction stuff, things such as adjusting the brightness, contrast, exposure, color saturation and highlights.
When it comes to filters, you will notice that Afterlight has a ton of filters. There are a total of 74 filters. These include 27 fully adjustable Original Filters, 14 Guest Filters made by various Instagram users, 18 Seasons Filters and the in-app purchase Wander pack that includes 15 filters. You have a slider that you can use to adjust the strength of the effect.
Some of these filters will seem like they are made for recreating the problems that were seen in the old film days, when things like chemicals were poorly applied or light got onto the negatives. You can even recreate things like chemical splatters and dust on the image. If you buy the $0.99 Instant Film pack in-app purchase then you will get even more of these imperfection options. You can also modify any of them by rotating it, flipping it or changing its color cast.
There are also some new Fusion filters which let you combine tools, filters and textures to create your own personal filters, which is a great feature. Unfortunately, Afterlight is missing some rather popular effects, such as the tilt shift (which is also known as selective focus) and art filters that can simulate things such as drawings, water colors, pencil sketches or cartoons. You also can’t add your own text titles.
Another cool feature Afterlight has is the ability to add frames, or image masks. This means that you can do things such as make a photo in the shape of a block letter of the alphabet. There are 128 different, simplistic and adjustable image masks that are all paired perfectly with Instagram. You will find a variety of shapes, such as diamonds, circles, triangles, playing card suits, an anchor and much more.
There are also simple instant photo borders available as well. There’s also an option to choose a white or black background for these cutouts, and an option to set the background’s transparency. If you also get the Wallpaper pack in-app purchase for $0.99 you will be able to add captivating old-fashioned wallpapers to use as the background instead of just the regular black or white ones.
You can also crop your photos by using the easy cropping tool with 15 different presets.
Once you have finished editing your cool photo, tap the Done button and you will be directed to a page full of output options. There are three size choices that can be saved to the camera roll or shared via e-mail, Instagram, Facebok or Flickr. There is also another very nice output option called Postcard. This, thanks to Sincerely.com lets you actually send an actual postcard in the mail from your phone. That’s something you don’t see that much in apps these days.
Overall, if you like messing around with the photos you make and want tons of different ways to edit it, Afterlight might be what you are looking for. With 15 adjustment tools, 74 filters, 78 textures and 128 different frames to use, Afterlight offers you a variety of ways to edit your photo.
